The Holderness girls’ JV soccer team contains a wide range of talent but is a cohesive group of competitive, high-spirited girls, who are determined to improve their skills, while enjoying the sport to the fullest.
The program is focused on skills development. Depending on the numbers each year, there are one or two junior varsity squads, ensuring that all players receive plenty of attention and experience in games. Players on the JV2 squad are traditionally new to the game, while players on the JV1 squad have the potential to move up and play at the varsity level. The coaches understand that there are varying levels of skill, so they are adept at catering practices to challenge all abilities. It is the hope that each player will develop over the course of the season and discover a love for the game.
The first half of our game against The Dublin School was the best soccer we have played all year. We worked on staying strong and playing aggressively during practice and it definitely showed in the game! We were controlling the middle well and distributing passes out wide. Megan Cunningham got us on the board early in the 5th minute but Dublin responded in the 19th minute. Charley Croft got another goal with 11 minutes left in the first half to give us the 2-1 lead going into half. Unfortunately, the halftime break changed the game dynamic. When we came out in the second half we looked really tired and our touches got sloppier. A PK was called on Megan Cunningham 7 minutes into the second half but our keeper Katrina Grzeszczuk made an excellent stop to maintain the lead! We couldn't hang on for long though and Dublin scored 3 minutes later during confusion in the box. Six minutes after that there was a foul called on us on the outside right of the field and Dublin scored with a beautiful free kick from pretty far out. In the last 24 minutes we were still in the game but couldn't capitalize on our chances and got progressively more tired. The game ended with a 2-3 loss.
For our first home game this season, the JV girls created many scoring opportunities against Brewster Academy. Multiple shots were taken by Ava Hosmer, Megan Cunningham, Charley Croft, Shinya Lee, and Annecy Kagan, but the opposing goalkeeper blocked each attempt to score. We were proud of our defensive performance as well, led by Mimi Hosmer, Ariana Anastos and our senior goalie Katrina Grzeszczuk. The team is learning to work together on the field, with better communication and passes.
The JV girls' team were ready for KUA Day with enthusiasm and grit. Ava Hosmer scored early in the game off of a long pass from our stopper, Ariana Anastos. In the second half, Megan Cunningham crossed the ball from the right and the ball sailed into the far corner of the net for our second goal. Our third goal came when the opposing goalkeeper fumbled a shot from Annecy Kagan. The girls were thrilled with their first win of the season and were proud of their hard work and perseverance on the field.
