The Power of One Trusted Adult: Building Confidence and Compassion at Holderness
Alexandra Molloy

At Holderness, coaching is fundamental to our work with students and extends far beyond athletics—it’s woven into every aspect of school life, whether in classrooms, dorms, advisory groups, or chapel.

Coaching is about forging meaningful connections that empower students to recognize their strengths, set goals, and confidently face challenges.

This week, our staff had the privilege of working with Dr. Brooklyn Raney, author of One Trusted Adult. Her research reveals the powerful truth that drives many educators: one trusted adult can transform a young person’s life. Dr. Raney’s partnership with Holderness began last year and included interviewing 38 students.

100% reported feeling cared for by the adults here—a testament to the deep relationships that define our community.

Dr. Raney’s work affirms that great coaching goes beyond expertise; it’s rooted in empathy, trust, and connection. She identifies the key qualities of ‘trusted adults’ as being accessible, holding healthy boundaries, and caring—those who offer encouragement, affirmation, and accountability. These qualities are what make the relationships at Holderness so impactful.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Dr. Brooklyn Raney and grateful that she has spent time with our students and adults over the years. She is a dynamic leader, educator, and partner, helping us increase and deepen meaningful connections at Holderness. Holderness is about people, and one of our school's foundational and intentional tenets is harnessing the positive relationships that our students forge with a team of adults to help these young people thrive and be the best possible versions of themselves." - John McVeigh, Head of School

At Holderness, our teachers and coaches inspire leadership, creativity, and self-discovery. Whether in the classroom, on the slopes, or in the art studio, they encourage students to embrace challenges, learn from experience, and grow with humility.
