Summer Projects, Construction Keep Campus Busy
Andrew Herring

As reported earlier this spring, campus has seen a buzz of activity as Holderness School works to complete a number of projects in advance of the 2022-23 academic year.

Nordic Trail Project
Trails are cleared and widened on what will be a 5-kilometer homologated Nordic skiing venue that will include 2 kilometers of lighted trail and 2.5 kilometers of snowmaking.  Final sculpting of the trails is underway.  The snowmaking system is about 80% complete and the installation of the new lights is ongoing.

The excavation of the snowmaking pond is complete.  Construction is nearly complete on an adjacent pumphouse to support snowmaking along the trails.  Fed by a natural spring, the pond is full and ready to go though some long-term stabilization work to the bankings remains.

Field Complex
The installation of an additional turf field is well underway with the laying of turf to begin by month’s end.  Loam is currently being screened for the construction of the adjacent practice field.  The loam will be spread and seeded in September to optimize best conditions for starting grass.  This field will need one year to mature before it can be used.  The softball field will be built at a future date.

Dormitory Renovation
Renovation of the Hinman Dormitory along Mount Prospect Road is underway. Foundation work will soon be complete.  The design of the dormitory is similar to the adjacent and recently renovated Henderson Dormitory.

Head of School’s House Renovations
As part of our Head of School leadership transition, we are taking advantage of the brief interruption to the occupancy of the Head’s House to do some much needed renovations.  In addition to refinishing the floors, repainting the interior and some electrical upgrades, several other small projects will be completed inside.  A phased project to replace siding and to add energy efficient windows will also be completed this summer.  Finally, a second emergency egress will be added to the basement.  This work should be completed in early August.

Hagerman Center Renovation
Work continues on Hagerman Center, home to the school’s auditorium and performing arts spaces as well as classrooms and academic spaces.  In addition to upgrading and improving classrooms and classroom technology, Hagerman Center will see an updated auditorium with improved acoustics, lighting, and sound with new added space for set construction, costume design, prop storage, and rehearsal.  Read more about the Hagerman Center renovation here.
