Holderness Winter Must-Haves
Alexandra Molloy

Winter at a boarding school hits a little different. Mother Nature just dropped over a foot of snow, and the single-digit temperatures have settled in. Early mornings, snowy walks to class, cozy dorm rooms, and afternoon practices that call for maximum coziness, warmth, and practicality.

We asked our community to share their winter must-haves: the items they rely on to stay warm and comfortable through the coldest months on campus.

From gear to brave the elements to taking advantage of spaces that make winter feel a little more like home, here’s a Holderness-approved list of what you really need to thrive in a boarding school winter.

  • Thick mittens (multiple submissions = 10/10 would recommend)
Like the ones we use for Out Back from LL Bean
  • Sunshine. Get it when you can!
  • Coffee Cart
  • Powder days. If you're going to live in winter, you might as well enjoy it!
  • The on-campus sauna. Yes, we do have one.
  • Heated vest for our athletic trainers at the outdoor rink.
Pro-tip: wear it under the Out Back parka, and you'll stay toasty warm.
  • Neckie. Necker. Buff. Neckwarmer. Whatever you call it, make sure it's available.
  • Puffer coat. A New England staple.
  • A cozy, plush blanket.
  • Toe warmers. Great for watching the Bulls dominate the outdoor hockey rink.
  • Homemade pancakes. Tastes like home.
  • A cozy fireplace. Especially the one in Head's House.
  • A good thermos.
  • Hot tea in a favorite cup.

Winter at Holderness isn’t just something you endure, it’s something you settle into. With the right layers, a few small comforts, and a community that knows how to make even the coldest, snowiest days feel warm, winter becomes part of the rhythm of campus life.

Whether you’re heading out for the mountains or winding down by the fire with a cup of tea, these simple must-haves help turn winter into a season worth savoring.
