Holderness Alums Named to US Biathlon Hall of Fame
Andrew Herring

When the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced that the 1972 US Biathlon Olympic Team would be welcomed into the US Biathlon Hall of Fame, Holderness was thrilled to see that two graduates were members of that remarkable team.

Dennis Donahue ‘62 and Dexter “Terry” Morse ‘64 proved themselves to be gifted Nordic skiers while at Holderness, both racing at Middlebury College and further developing their skills as members of the US Army Modern Winter Biathlon Training Center near Fort Richardson, Alaska while serving in the Army.

As members of the US Biathlon Olympic Team, Dennis and Terry were part of the relay team that secured a sixth place finish at the 1972 Winter Olympic Games in Sapporo, Japan, a feat that has been unmatched by any other American team.

“What an honor it is for these great Holderness athletes to achieve this milestone,” says 1984 US Nordic Olympic Team Coach and Head of School Phil Peck. “We are so proud of what they’ve achieved on snow, but we are even more proud of the people they have become and how they have truly lived up to the motto, mission, and values of the school.”

In addition to the 1972 Winter Games, Dennis competed in the 1976 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria.  Following the 1976 games, Dennis returned to Holderness, where he taught and coached for seven years.

Terry also remained connected to Holderness, with three children graduating from the New Hampshire boarding school.

Dennis and Terry aren’t the only Holderness graduates to be named to the US Biathlon Hall of Fame. Charlie Kellog ‘58 was named to the Hall of Fame in 2010.  Holderness has also produced 17 Olympians and 38 National Team members.
