He, She, They, and Ze - Gender At Holderness
Thea Dodds

As an Epispical school, we are committed to a greater understanding and inclusion of all of God’s children.  That understanding, especially when it comes to gender identity, is constantly evolving in the world and in our school community.  Holderness School is also evolving our approach to supporting transgender, non-binary, and gender queer students. Our priority is always the life, safety, and joy of all of our students.

To this end, all of our programs aim to provide a safe space for students, ensuring the right to discuss and express their gender identity and expression openly and to decide when, with whom, and how much private information to share.  Holderness is a gender inclusive community and our curriculum aims to challenge social constructs and prejudices such as homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny.  Throughout the disciplines we explore gender identities, while developing empathy, critical thinking, and skills to advocate for others.   In accordance with our motto we are working throughout our curriculum and student life “for the betterment of humankind and God’s creation,” promoting an awareness, a responsibility, and a willingness to act on global issues and to be more empathetic citizens.

In the Bible, Isaiah 1:17 says:

Learn to do right; seek justice.
Defend the oppressed.
Take up the cause of the fatherless;
plead the case of the widow.

The soul and spirit of Holderness School compels us to act in tangible, meaningful, and enduring ways. Ultimately this work is vital and linked to our mission, which asks our school to work for God and Humankind.
