Following an historic 23-3-3 season that saw the Holderness School Boys Varsity Hockey secure their first-ever selection to the Elite Eight, New England prep school hockey’s most competitive tournament, it’s no surprise that Head Coach Alan Thompson ’04 has been selected as Neutral Zone’s Prep Hockey Coach of the Year Runner-Up.
Neutral Zone is considered New England’s most comprehensive news source of the amateur hockey world, including high school, juniors, and college.
"This particular award is one that I have always felt should be awarded to the efforts of an entire staff, not just to recognize an individual coach,” says Thompson. “The year's success on the scoresheet was the product of a perfect blend of talented and hard working players mixed with a very dedicated and devoted staff covering lots of areas of preparation.”
A 2004 Holderness graduate, Thompson went on to play for the University of New Hampshire Wildcats from 2005-09. He returned to Holderness in 2014 to join the Admission Office and was named head coach in 2015. In addition to leading the boys varsity hockey program, Thompson serves as Associate Director of Admission and Financial Aid.
Thompson was supported by Assistant Coach Joe Gaudet, who helped develop one of the strongest defensive groups in program history.
Thompson credits the work of Strength and Conditioning Coach Andrea Sweet, Sports Counselor Ginger Comstock, and Athletic Trainers Nick Laurence and Maddie Hamilton who kept players in top physical and mental condition throughout the season. Everyone from the school’s athletics staff to the maintenance team, dining staff, and parents deserve mentioning, says Thompson, for helping make this season such a success.
“We were able to finish the season undefeated at home, largely in part to the supportive atmosphere we felt at games from the student body and the adult community,” Thompson says. “ The blend of all these peoples’ efforts together is the real essence of this award.”
