10 Essential Items for Your Boarding School Dorm Room
Alexandra Molloy

Moving into a boarding school dorm room is more than just a change of address—it’s the introduction of a new home filled with new friends, new places, and plenty of learning both in and out of the classroom. Before you can dive into classes, athletics, and study sessions, you’ll need to make sure your room is stocked with the essentials that turn a blank space into your home away from home.

We asked a few of our students to give us their "must-haves" to make the transition to dorm life more comfortable. From practical items to small comforts that make all the difference, here are 10 items that will help you settle in, stay organized, and feel at home all year long.

1. Two sets of sheets.

Having a backup set means you can swap them out on laundry day without waiting for the wash to finish. You do not want to be stuck waiting for your only set to finish in the dryer at 11 p.m. Swap ‘em out and you’re good to go.

2. At least 2 pillows, max 3 to 4.

Enough for comfort, not so many that they take over your bed or end up on the floor. Get comfy for a Netflix binge, but not so many you lose your bed under a pillow avalanche.

3. A cozy blanket and curtains!

The blanket keeps you warm during study sessions or movie nights; curtains add privacy and block out early morning light.

4. Organization items.

Small storage bins keep snacks, clothes, and gear tucked away; hangers and a shoe rack keep the closet from turning into chaos, and your floor from turning into an obstacle course.

5. Headphones.

Essential for tuning out distractions during study hall and pumping up your energy at the gym.

6. A comfy chair or beanbag.

Gives you a comfortable place to hang out with friends or read without always sitting on your bed.

7. Fun clothes!

Spirit days are serious business—stock up on pink, neon, jerseys, Hawaiian shirts, blackout fits, and whiteout gear. Future you will thank you.

8. A stocked mini fridge.

Perfect for keeping water, sports drinks, and your favorite midnight snacks close at hand. The convenience level here is *chef’s kiss*.

9. LED lights.

A must-have. Mood lighting makes your room feel way more “you.” Bonus points if they change colors.

10. Personalized decorations!

Something to go on the walls like a mirror, flags, posters, pictures of friends and family, to make it feel more like home. Make it feel like your space, not just a dorm.

EXTRA EXTRA

One of those room fresheners. Yes, vibes matter.

Moving into your dorm is more than just unpacking boxes—it’s about creating a space that feels like yours. With these must-haves, you’ll be ready for everything from hang-outs to epic spirit days.

Remember, it’s the little touches like that cozy blanket, LED lights, or your favorite room scent that turn a plain dorm room into your home away from home.

Now get packing… and get ready for the best year yet.
