  • Bulls battle for a draw

Saturday was another scorching day on the turf, but the Bulls rose to the occasion for a hard fought 80 minute battle.

The teams traded possession in the first half, until Holderness was able to find their rhythm and put a lot of offensive pressure on Vermont's back line. A beautiful passing sequence between Ellie Batchelder and Abby Vieira led to the Bulls' first tally just under 20 minutes into the game. Vieira's pass found Batchelder just inside the 18, and a quick touch around the sweeper allowed her to slot the ball under the diving keeper for a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, after many more offensive chances, a Vermont defender was called for a handball in the box. Ellie Batchelder calmly stepped up to take the penalty kick and easily placed it in the lower right corner for a 2-0 lead.

Vermont was able to work their way back down the field, taking advantage of many throw ins. Eventually, they were able to send in a cross from the flank and finish a scramble in front of the net to close the gap, 2-1.

Both teams came out ready to fight in the second half. Holderness controlled much of the posession and offensive movement, but Vermont was not ready to give up. Both teams continued to battle, until a foul was called against Holderness in the midfield. Vermont sent a nice long ball behind the Bulls defense, and created a breakaway opportunity which they were able to finish to knot the game at 2.

Holderness had some late chances in the last few minutes, but luck was not on our side and we weren't able to find the game winner. Despite the result, we played our most complete game of the season and will ride this momentum into next week against our next opponents, Exeter and New Hampton.

  • Bulls earn their first win

The Bulls bounced back from their Saturday loss to top the Kents Hill Huskies 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The team started on a slow foot, and struggled to maintain possession throughout the first half. Though the defenders and midfielders tried to send long balls to the fowards, the Kents Hill defense played deep in the field and shut down all opportunities for a shot on net.

It wasn't until three minutes left in the first half, when Julia Knight found the ball at her feet on the right flank and sent a beautifully lofted cross into the box and past the Kents Hill keeper. Ellie Batchelder was there to finish the ball for the Bulls' first goal of the season. It turned out to be the fire that the Bulls needed. Less than a minute later, Phie Miles made a streaking run with the ball around many defenders and up the right flank again. Her cross found the feet of Abby Vieira, who managed to finish a scramble in front of the net for a 2-0 lead.

On the restart, Kents Hill wasted no time in sending a booming ball down the field behind the Holderness defense. Though we recovered with speed and tried to defend the ball, the players got tangeld up in the box and a penalty kick was awarded. Kents Hill finished their opportunity to close the gap right before the halftime whistle blew.

The Bulls maintained much better possession in the second half, and stepped up their team defense. This generated much more chances on net, but despite our 15 shots in the second half, the Kents Hill keeper and packed-in defense worked hard to keep us scoreless. Overall, it was a great first win and we look forward to carrying this momentum into our first Lakes Region match of the year against Vermont Academy on Saturday.

  • Bulls fall to Bulldogs in home opener

The Bulls fell to a strong Berwick squad on a blazing hot afternoon on Robert T. Low Field. Strong defensive play held the Berwick Bulldogs to an almost scoreless first half, until a misclear in the box allowed a Berwick forward to slot the ball past a diving Anna Pollak in net. Both Anna, and Caroline Ferri made some beautiful saves on the day and kept the Bulls in the game. Despite some pockets of nice possession and ball movement, Holderness was unable to convert on any of our quality chances. Two more Berwick goals came in the second half to put the game out of reach. The Bulls will look to learn and build on this game as we look to our next opponent, Kents Hill.
