In a good match-up on the road at Cardigan Mt. today, Holderness had the game 2-2 midway through the second half, but Cardigan’s young booters took advantage of two good scoring opportunities to earn the 4-2 win.
First, a few individuals wearing blue and white need recognition: Charlie Crumbo stepped in to play the center defense position today and was outstanding. Starting goalie Alan Yu made two breakaway saves in the first half to keep Cardigan off the scoreboard. And, Jackson Lehner had his first starting assignment today and rose to the challenge with exceptional play at both ends of the field.
Holderness would win the first half 1-0 on the before mention great goaltending of Yu and the slick finishing touch of Young Gwon. Eleven minutes into the game, Mikey Cosgrave placed a perfect corner kick onto the head of waiting midfielder Steve Ju. Ju’s header looked like it was going in, but the Cardigan goalie made a great save but couldn’t hang onto the ball. This is when Gwon swooped in and buried the loose ball into the back of the net.
With a tenuous lead going into the second half, Holderness knew that they would have their hands full. It took Cardigan only one minutes before they knotted the score at 1-1. Unable to regroup, the Bulls fell back on their heels and gave up another goal just four minutes later. Now down 1-2 and thirty minutes still to play, the team didn’t cave. Right off the kickoff, they pushed forward and took the ball deep into the Cardigan box. A scramble ensued, and as a Cardigan player desperately tried to clear a loose ball, he volleyed it directly into the back-side of Holderness striker Brooks Reed. The ball ricocheted off of Reed and into the Cardigan net! Not the most glamorous goal of the game, but it counted, and the game was now tied 2-2.
The remaining minutes saw good soccer from both sides, but Cardigan would ultimately get the game winner with fifteen minutes left on the clock. The hard work and hustle of Cosgrave, Charlie Morris and Finn Pilaro made the final minutes interesting, but with the Bulls pushed forward down the stretch, Cardigan got a late goal past goalie Matt Butchma to seal the victory at 4-2.
Another good energy game by Holderness leaves the team optimistic, and they will search for their first win of the season on Saturday at New Hampton at 2:30 p.m.
