Under the Rev. Coolbaugh’s supervision, sports such as polo, tennis, football, and baseball were introduced to the school. Under Rev. Coolbaugh’s eye, Holderness also began a program to prepare selected students for the military academies through drilling and exercises. Three literary publications also sprung up during Coolbaugh’s tenure as did many extra–curricular activities and clubs. Enrollment rose, as well, and the school had almost outgrown the living space in Knowlton Hall by his retirement in 1892.
