Seven lead changes, only three total penalties and two very well match teams entertained a spirited St. Paul’s home crowd that saw SPS eke out a one-goal victory. Holderness would open the scoring five minutes into the first period on a Tuomas Himberg unassisted snipe. Just seconds later, though, Holderness would give that goal right back by giving up a powerplay goal. Only a minute later, Holderness’s Justin Kim would tally an unassisted goal of his own to regain the lead, but as scripted, Holderness gave that right back when they surrendered a breakaway tally by SPS.
The second period saw St. Paul’s step up their defensive play and frustrate the Holderness offense. SPS would earn two goals in the period to take a two-goal lead, but with just seconds left on the 2nd period clock, Reilly Cepuritis would dish a perfect pass over to Jerry Wang cutting to the net on an odd-man rush and provide Holderness with their third goal of the game.
The last second goal was key in creating good momentum going into the third, for just three minutes into the period Cepuritis would draw a crowd again and this time find Justin Kim alone in front. Justin would slam home the puck to tie the score at 4-4 with plenty of hockey left to be played. Both teams had good opportunities to score, and Holderness goalie Sergio Yap was outstanding in the hectic waning minutes. Unfortunately, with five minutes left on the clock, Holderness would turn the puck over in front of their own next and the result was a SPS score to take a one goal lead. Holderness would have the final faceoff in the SPS zone with Yap pulled for the extra skater, but St. Paul’s weathered the storm and took home the victory.
A busy stretch of hockey for the Bulls as they play three games in four days. They next host New Hampton on Saturday for a 4:30 start.
