Chicago Cubs General Manager Jed Hoyer ’92 to Speak at Commencement

Emily Magnus
It is with great pleasure that Holderness School announces that Jed Hoyer, Executive Vice President/GM of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs, will be the graduation speaker at the 138th Commencement ceremonies on May 28, 2017.
Jed grew up near the Holderness School campus, where his mother was the school nurse and father was the school doctor. When he became a student, Jed played baseball, as well as football and basketball, thriving in Holderness School’s multiple sport approach to athletics.  Jed graduated in 1992, and went on to attend Wesleyan University, where he studied American History and played baseball. He was a pitcher and a shortstop at Wesleyan.  After his senior year, he received the Ahrens Award as the school’s top male athlete.
Upon graduating from Wesleyan University in 1996, Jed worked in a few different industries before ultimately finding his career in Major League Baseball. In 2004, as Assistant to the GM of the Boston Red Sox, Jed helped to lead them to their first World Series Championship in 86 years.  The Red Sox followed that up by winning the World Series again in 2007.  Following the 2009 season, Jed left the Red Sox to become the General Manager of the San Diego Padres.  He led the Padres to a 90-win season in 2010 despite having the lowest payroll in MLB.  Jed left San Diego to join the Cubs as Executive VP/General Manager after the 2011 season.  In Chicago, Jed helped the 2016 Cubs to their first World Series Championship in 108 years.
Jed has an incredible story that extends beyond baseball. It is one of patience, persistence and hard work.
We look forward to welcoming Jed to campus in a few short weeks!
