Rev. Abby VanderBrug Named Interim Chaplain

Greg Kwasnik
Holderness School is pleased to announce the hiring of the Rev. Abby VanderBrug as the school’s new interim chaplain.
Abby comes to Holderness from Christ Church Greenwich in Greenwich, CT, where she served as the associate rector for children and family ministries and preschool chaplain. She will live on campus with her husband Michael and the couple’s two-year-old daughter, Rosslynn.

“My family and I are so excited to be joining the Holderness community!” Abby says. “Much of what attracted us to Holderness is the strong sense of community. We can't wait to meet the students and faculty we've heard so many wonderful things about.”

Abby brings a wealth of pastoral experience to Holderness. In her most recent role at Christ Church Greenwich, she collaborated with multi-clergy staff to lead liturgy, preach, and provide pastoral care. She also taught confirmation and baptismal preparation, served as chaplain for the Royal School of Choral Music program, and co-directed the St. Nicholas Children’s Choir. Prior to her role at Christ Church Greenwich, Abby served as deacon and director of Christian formation for children and families at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, MI. During that time, she was also chaplain for Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI, a Level 1 trauma center. Abby earned her Master of Divinity from Emory University in 2017.

“We are so pleased to have Abby joining us as the interim chaplain,” says Head of School Phil Peck. “During the interview process folks consistently commented about her warmth, positive energy, passion for the outdoors/athletics, intellectual curiosity, and her love of Holderness.”

In addition to her chaplain duties, Abby will teach two classes at Holderness: The Bible as Literature and Ethics. She replaces Rev. Joshua Hill, who left Holderness this summer to become the rector of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Cape Elizabeth, ME. The school will launch a search for a permanent chaplain later this fall.
