Student Magazine Wins National Award

Greg Kwasnik
Despite a number of editorial challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Holderness School’s literary and visual arts magazine, Mosaic, recently took home a top award from the 2020 Scholastic Yearbook and Magazine Awards.
The Mosaic earned a First Place award for schools with 500 or fewer students. The Scholastic Yearbook and Magazine Awards are bestowed annually by the American Scholastic Press Association. Publications are scored across a range of criteria, including content, organization, and design. The publication’s overall score determines the place awarded.
“It's a nice validation of the staff's hard work,” says Janice Dahl, a Holderness English teacher and the Mosaic’s faculty advisor. “I was impressed by how dedicated they were to the process, especially given the challenging conditions.”
The Mosaic’s staff had to clear a number of hurdles to publish their award-winning edition. Like their fellow Holderness students, they spent much of the spring semester learning at home because of the pandemic. Since the Mosaic is released each fall, students spent the spring and summer reviewing student submissions remotely. “We met twice a month throughout the spring and summer to get it all done,” Janice says. “Although it was challenging to balance schedules and time zones, it was fun to see each other and have robust conversations about the direction of the magazine.”
The editorial team that assembled the Fall 2020 Mosiac included Isabella Qian ’21; Tiffany Feng ’21; Grace Roe ’21; Abigail Palmer ’21; Meg MacLaury; and Charlie Werner ’23. Despite the pandemic’s challenges, the team put together a beautiful, 62-page publication filled with poems, illustrations, photographs, and essays from Holderness students.
