New On-Campus Freeski and Snowboard Jumping Venue

An innovative new freeski and snowboard jumping venue is now under construction on the hillside above the Holderness School football field - a project that, once completed, will help the school’s freeskiers and snowboarders safely reach new heights.
In mid-September, construction began on a training Air Bag Jump for the school’s freeski and snowboarding teams. When the project is completed, athletes will descend a ramp built into the hillside above the football field, launch off a jump, and land on an 1,800 square-foot Air Bag equipped with an impact-absorbing cushion. The Air Bag will allow skiers and snowboarders to train in all seasons with great effect, and to throw more technical tricks.

Perhaps most importantly, the Air Bag will help minimize the risk of injury while student-athletes train to improve their aerial skills. Currently, students use an existing trampoline in Bartsch to develop aerial awareness and technical skills. From there, they move directly to practicing on-snow aerials. Once completed, the new air bag will offer an intermediate step where athletes can practice their skills while minimizing the risk of injury.  “While there is no doubt that the Air Bag Jump will aid in the progression of our student-athletes, I sleep better at night knowing that we’re doing everything in our power to reduce their risk of injury,” says Director of Snowboard and Freeski Alan Smarse.

Construction will continue on the new air bag jump this fall, and could be completed as soon as the end of this year.
