While the majority of the Holderness student body was relaxing and enjoying their spring break, the Eastern Alpine Ski team was hard at work preparing for and competing in their largest races of the season.
The Holderness Eastern Alpine program is comprised of 53 skiers. Director of Snow Sports Ivar Dahl, asserts that “everyone comes in with goals,” and throughout the course of the season “everyone has highlights.” However, this season several students have pushed themselves to accomplish their goals and compete in higher levels of alpine skiing. Earlier in March, Holderness had six students (Emma Reynolds ‘22, Jasmine Whittaker ‘22, Annika Howard ‘22, Wells Gillette ‘22, Topher Davenport ‘21 and Joe Colwell ‘21) represent both the school and the state of New Hampshire at the Eastern Region U16 Championships. These six skiers “have stood out and made it to the next level” on a U16 team that has had “strong results” this season. On the International Ski Federation (FIS) side of things, this past week Claudia Cantin ‘19, Hayden Dahl ‘19 and Andrea Reynolds ‘20, competed in the US Senior and Junior National Championships at Waterville Valley and Cannon/Mittersill as members of the Eastern Region Team after qualifying based on exemplary results throughout the season.
Coach Dahl would also like to highlight the coaching staff for “how much and how often they are [on the mountain] but also for how much they care about the kids.” Often traveling four days out of the week for events, combined with a rigorous practice schedule, the coaches, as well as the athletes, often don’t receive recognition for their hard work and commitment.
The ski season comes to a close this week with the Eastern Cup Finals at Burke Mountain. Holderness will be represented by eight students: Hayden Dahl, Andrea Reynolds, Angus Christie ‘20, Brooks Reed ‘21, Jimmy Bocock ‘21, Ebba Eneqvist ‘20, Viivi Hamalainen ‘19 and Kathryn Potter ‘19.
