Holderness Students Attend Model UN Conference

On April 21st, the Holderness School Debate Team participated in a Model United Nations Conference at Noble & Greenough School.

The one-day Model UN conference was, according to Noble & Greenough, “dedicated to strengthening the voices of future leaders by fostering collaboration, public speaking, and problem-solving. Through exploring a wide range of topics and real-world problems, we hope to empower students to become more active in their communities."

Students debated historical events such as the English Civil War, the Australian Emu War, and the Golden Age of Piracy.  They also debated the current situation of the Uyghur Muslims in China as well as the Fentanyl Crisis.  

The Debate Team is supported by Holderness graduate and former trustee Mr. Jim Stearns ’68.  Mr. Stearns twice captained the Debate Team at Holderness, and also was a member of the Debate Team during his undergraduate years at Dartmouth.  He went on to receive his law degree from Georgetown University and still practices law in the greater-Washington, D.C. area today.  Mr. Stearns believes that participating on the Debate Team at Holderness not only sharpened his public speaking skills, but also taught him how to formulate arguments, two skills he still uses today as an attorney.
