Weld Hall, our multi-purpose dining and community center – a building that in many ways renews us daily – is in need of renewal itself. Built in the 1960s, the size and construction of the building thoughtfully reflected the realities of its day and has served us well. In the interim years, however, our community has grown from 260 to over 350, and the over-taxed kitchen and dining room spaces no longer support our current and future community and program goals.
In late February, our Board voted to move forward with an exciting renovation aimed at expanding the dining and serving areas and modernizing our kitchen facility, all in support of our community and program goals.
Wasting no time (we hope to have it completed before the Class of 2011 comes on campus in the fall), we broke ground immediately following Special Programs in March, and it's been exciting to see the progress already. While the interior of the facility will be left largely intact until after Commencement, the contractors will be doing all they can outside to meet the tight deadline.
There is no place more central to the life of Holderness School than Weld Hall. Our community gathers in the dining hall regularly for meals; our faculty comes together regularly in the lounge to discuss policy and students; parents and students gather there for Opening, Parents' Weekend, and Commencement celebrations; and more than half of the students and leaders employed as part of the Job Program do their daily work within its walls.
