At Holderness School, most sports operate at a varsity, junior varsity, and in some cases "prep" levels of competition. The variety of sports and levels offered allows each student to find his or her own niche. Because of the variety of options and the school's small size, over the course of a year almost every student receives dedicated training and coaching, wears a Holderness uniform, and regularly represents the school in interscholastic competition.
The school's 600 acres offer outstanding sports facilities, including eight large playing fields, ten tennis courts, a covered artificial ice rink, and ten kilometers of cross-country ski trails that have been the site of national competitions. The award-winning Bartsch Athletic Center provides locker, shower, and weight-training facilities, while the Gallop Athletic Center offers two squash courts, a ski preparation room, a fitness center, and a basketball court/multipurpose arena.
Proximity to local ski mountains is an added benefit. The school's elite Eastern alpine ski team trains each day on the most spectacular slopes of nearby Cannon Mountain ski area. The varsity and junior varsity alpine ski teams, as well as our snowboard team, train at Loon Mountain, while our freestyle and freeride programs enjoy training at the Waterville Valley ski resort, also located close to the Holderness campus.
In almost every case, Holderness coaching is done by teachers who have themselves competed with distinction in their sports. These coaches personify the manner in which mind, body, and spirit can enhance and reinforce each other. Our coaches aim to challenge their athletes, to help them learn to reach beyond themselves, and to teach them a life-long love of their sports.
